Lebensohl
Competitive bidding has become more sophisticated and accurate in recent years. These improvements in contested auctions have become necessary, because it seems the opponents are always (or almost always) making life difficult by disrupting our bidding sequences. One of the most frequently played and useful conventions is Lebensohl. It's part of virtually all top players' system and it will be helpful to you if you have a regular partnership. Contents

Negative Doubles
Although Negative Doubles have been around since the 1930's, they were popularized by Alvin Roth in 1957 in his book "Bridge Is A Partnership Game." He called his bid the Sputnik after the recently launched Russian Satellite. Negative Doubles have become an essential part of the arsenal of virtually all club and tournament players. In fact, if they had to choose one convention to play, many top players would vote for it. The convention is called a "negative" double to distinguish it from the "positive" or penalty double of an overcall.

Two Over One Game Force
The passing years bring progress and innovation in every aspect of our lives. Bridge is no exception. Although the play of the hand by experts and good players was already at a very high level 25 or 50 years ago, the same cannot be said for bidding methods. Auctions in those "old days" were primitive compared with what today's players use. Now many club and tournament players have adopted sophisticated systems, and they can bid more accurately than most experts in the past.
